Jack and the Beanstalk is the fourth episode in the first season.

Plot[]

Baby Joy, Whyatt's little sister, is having a GIANT-sized tantrum, and nothing will calm her down! The Super Readers use their literacy powers to venture up Jack's Beanstalk and meet a real giant, who's acting like a big baby. Whyatt learns about the soothing power of music from his big brother Jack, and the Super Readers save the day.

Summary[]

The episode begins as Whyatt gets a call from Joy. Whyatt runs to find what's the matter. As he runs, he greets Poppa Pig along the way and meets his brother.

Baby Joy has a tantrum. Whyatt gets a bottle of milk and a smiley toy, but she still has that giant-sized tantrum. Whyatt calls the group and they meet up at the Book Club where he told his friends that it was Joy and that she is crying and crying, so Princess Pea covered her ears and used her wand to get Jack and the Beanstalk book. They all transform, zoom away, and Super Why reads along three pages. They climb the beanstalk as Alpha Pig is helping to build alphabet stairs, which is the easy way for him and the other Super Readers to get to the giant. Princess Presto spells the word "open" to open the drawbridge, and Super Why replaces the words to complete the sentences, but the giant doesn't want to have a snack or a drink. Jack arrives in time and plays a song for the giant, and Super Why places the word "bed" in the sentence. As the four kids went back to the Book Club, the letters are... M-U-S-I-C and the answer is MUSIC.

As Whyatt went back to Joy's room, he played the ukulele and played the same song that Jack played for the giant and Joy stops crying and is very happy and his mom is also happy. He went out where his friends are and said it worked!

Trivia[]

  • In the scene where Joy has a tantrum, you can hear the crying sound effect coming from the Arthur character Baby Kate.
  • This episode marks the first appearance of Jack Beanstalk.
  • It was also revealed that Jack is Whyatt's big brother.
  • The title refers to the 1952 Abbott and Costello movie Jack and the Beanstalk, and it also refers to the 1967 Gene Kelly and Ted Cassidy movie of the same name.
  • In the original story, Jack is a poor boy who manages to make his fortune by stealing various treasures from the giant at the top of the beanstalk. In the episode, this is all absent, and Jack himself doesn't appear until near the resolution, and uses a harp to put the giant to sleep (which is actually a detail from the original).
  • The story the super readers go into Jack and the Beanstalk, also references Gilligan's Island V for Vitamins, where Gilligan dreams about the story.
  • Near the end of the episode, Whyatt uses the ukulele to play an instrumental version of Jack's signature and theme song to calm Baby Joy down.
  • This is the only Super Why! episode to have two wrong answers in the story changing segment.
  • When the giant says, "Fee fi fo fak!", not asking for a silly snack, his foot stomping sounds aren't used.
  • When the giant says, "Fee fi fo filk!", not asking for a cup of milk, he transforms into a naked infant to cry even more when the cup of milk disappears, but he stops crying when he goes back to his normal self.
  • In this episode, "Fee fi fo fak!" means "No thaks!" and "Fee fi fo filk!" means "No thilks!".
  • In this episode, the giant says "Fee fi fo fak!" in a sad voice and "Fee fi fo filk!" in an angry voice.

Goofs/Errors[]

  • When Pig makes it to the top of the beanstalk, Red is wearing her normal clothes.
  • When the giant isn't asking for a cup of milk, he transforms into a naked infant, but after Jack Beanstalk first appears in the story, he is seen in his normal clothes.
  • Right when Pig says “beanstalk” he sounds like Owen in Portage Time 2012.
  • The strawberries aren't mentioned, but they're referred to as a silly snack, as said by the giant.
